What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease that happens when the blood glucose, also called blood sugar is too high in your blood. Diabetes is a chronic health condition and can harm the person in many ways. If the person has diabetes, either their body doesn’t make insulin or it can’t use the insulin that it makes. When the body doesn’t get enough insulin, the blood sugar levels in the bloodstream start to increase causing diabetes. Mainly, diabetes is of 3 major types. Also called diabetes mellitus.
- Type 2 diabetes (insulin resistant)
- Type 1 diabetes
- Prediabetic
The most common type of diabetes is type 2 diabetes of all. In this type of diabetes, the body doesn’t produce insulin or it resists insulin. This type of diabetes is commonly seen in adulthood.
In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas produces insulin in a very scant quantity or some cases don’t produce any insulin. This type of diabetes occurs in adolescence. The exact cause of type 1 diabetes is unknown and it is an autoimmune disorder in which your immune cells destroy the insulin or insulin-producing cells.

Self-monitoring of blood glucose levels is very important for a diabetic patient. The patient must know about his/her blood sugar level at any given time. This is done with the help of a glycemic reader (glucose meter). Based on the results, the patient can know about the progress of his/her treatment. Glycemic control can reach its optimum level with the help of proper diet, taking medications, active monitoring of glucose levels, etc.
-
Proper medication-
Proper Medications for diabetic patients are very important. Medications are used to lower blood sugar levels when other methods aren’t working. The effectiveness of such medications depends upon the dose and the timing of such medicines. Other medications which are used for some unrelated diseases can also affect the blood sugar levels of your body. Some factors that play a role in proper medications are the proper storage of insulin, caution with new medications, dosage, and timings. If the insulin isn’t stored properly. Insulin is extremely sensitive to very high temperatures. So, it should be stored at a proper temperature. Whenever a diabetic patient starts a new medication, he/she should always consult the doctor to know whether the medicine will affect the blood sugar levels or not. Generally, high blood pressure and high cholesterol medicines affect the blood sugar levels in your blood. You should check with your doctor before taking them.
-
Alcohol
Alcohol has a very major effect on the blood sugar levels of diabetic patients. As we all know, the alcohol that we consume is metabolized by the liver. But the liver also has stored sugar which it releases whenever the blood sugar level of the patient is low. But when the diabetic patient is on alcohol, the liver gets busy metabolizing the alcohol rather than releasing glucose. Thus, the blood sugar level decreases, and a state of hypoglycemia is established. Alcohol can cause a low level of blood sugar level as soon as you drink and keeps the blood sugar level low till the 24-hour mark. The diabetic patient should be very cautious about drinking alcohol. Alcohol can drastically cause the blood sugar levels to fluctuate so, the diabetic patient should take the advice of the doctor on whether to have alcohol or not.
